In 1984 begint de PKK met een gewapende opstand en zijn daar veel gevechten tussen een Koerden en dit Turkse leger. Tienduizenden lieden verliezen hun leven en complete Koerdische dorpen worden aangaande een kaart geveegd.
In de beginjaren aangaande de staat Turkije vond ons serie opstanden tussen sommige Koerden plaats. De allereerste opstand was een Kocgiri opstand van alevitische Koerden, die een onafhankelijk Koerdistan tot streven hadden. Die opstand werd neergeslagen door Turkije. De tweede opstand stond tussen leiding over sjeik Said, ons soennitische Koerdische geestelijke. Tevens die opstand werd onderdrukt en sjeik Said werd gearresteerd en opgehangen. Bij een derde opstand, in 1927, riepen een Koerden in het noordoosten betreffende het land een Republiek Ararat uit.
Ondanks discriminatie aangaande de Koerdische Turken, lukt dit sommigen toch hoge posities in het land te bekleden. Zo is Turgut Ögaat, deels betreffende Koerdische komaf, over 1989 tot 1993 president met Turkije en onder zijn leiding verbetert de positie aangaande de Koerden enigszins.
